How to Get the Best Confetti Photos on Your Wedding Day

Oct 8, 2024

Confetti moments are some of the most joyful and colourful highlights of a wedding – and I bloody LOVE confetti! The perfect confetti shot can really capture the happiness of your big day. As a Brighton wedding photographer, I’ve had the absolute bloomin’ JOY of witnessing countless confetti tosses, and I’m here to share some tips on how to get the best confetti photos!

1. Choose the Right Confetti

Always Biodegradable: First and foremost, let’s put the planet first! There are so many biodegradable confetti options like dried flowers, paper confetti, or even fresh petals.

Size Matters!: Circle paper discs photograph so well, however, a tiny handful of dried up petals…not so much. If you want impact from your confetti photos, choose a confetti that will fall and flutter slowly so your confetti moment lasts longer. Petals also work well for this, but if you have your heart set on dried flowers, make sure you have a lot of them.

Colour Coordination: If you have a colour palette or scheme for your wedding day, match your confetti to it. This will help create a cohesive look that ties into the rest of your wedding decor.

2. Timing is Everything

The Moment: Plan the confetti toss for a moment that feels natural – this is usually when you exit the ceremony, however, we can discuss the perfect moment & location for confetti ahead of your wedding. That way, it can ensure genuine emotions and reactions, making for the best photos.

Don’t Rush: Yes, I get it, confetti is very exciting! But don’t run down your confetti tunnel – smile and enjoy it. Do a little dance or smooch halfway down the tunnel. Do whatever you feel! But make sure to take your time and soak in all that joy while I snap away – this will guarantee the best confetti photos.

3. Be Mindful, Be Demure!

Be Mindful of your Environment: As previously mentioned, always consider the environment with biodegradable options. But also consider your venue – we don’t want to be making enemies on your wedding day! Most venues are happy with confetti so long as it’s biodegradable. However, some have restrictions. If confetti isn’t an option, consider bubble guns or even sparklers later in the day. That way you can still embrace the confetti vibes without upsetting venues who don’t allow it.

4. Get Everyone Involved

Make It a Group Effort: Encourage your guests to join in! The more people involved, the longer your confetti walk will be and the more confetti photos you will get!

Assign a Confetti Coordinator: Designate a friend or family member to help orchestrate the toss. They can hand out confetti from bags, baskets or individual sachets as guests walk past to get in line.

5. The More The Better!

Handfuls and Handfuls: Take whatever amount of confetti you think you need and double it – or quadruple it! With confetti, more is always more. Walking out in a cloud of confetti will look so epic in your photos – trust me. One or two dried petals per guest will not show up on photos! The same applies for bubbles if that is the option you are going for. Opt for bubble guns and machines rather than tiny pots that guests will only manage to blow one or two bubbles from!

Distribute!: The easiest way to hand out confetti to guests is from baskets or big bags of the stuff. That way your guests can just grab a handful or two and be ready to throw it straight over you. Confetti from individual sachets works too but it’s best if your guests empty it into their hands ahead of your confetti walk so it’s not just falling as a big clump straight from the sachet.

6. Save Some For The Dancefloor

Daytime to Nighttime: Consider reserving some confetti for your first dance or evening portraits. It doesn’t have to just be a one time event after the ceremony if you are a big confetti fan like myself!

Confetti Cannons: Confetti cannons on the dancefloor will always look bangin’! It could be during your first dance if you get a friend to pop them when the music drops or you and your boo could release them on the dancefloor to get the party started!

7. Trust Your Photographer

Let Me Work My Magic: As your wedding photographer, my job is to capture the essence of your day. Trust me to get those perfect shots and embrace the moment. Smile, stride or dance through your confetti tunnel! Accept that it’s going to get everywhere and you will probably find it in your undies/hair/mouth afterwards – this actually will make for some fantastic photos and lots of laughs!

In Summary…

Confetti moments are a beautiful way to celebrate your wedding and create lots of fun, joyful photos. With a little planning and the right approach, we can ensure that your confetti photos turn out to look ahhhmazing. Remember, it’s all about having fun and allowing things to all fall into place (pun intended) with a big ol’ smile on your face. Happy planning!

You can purchase some of the best confetti (in my humble opinion) from the ever amazing Flutter, Darlings! or the fantastic Proper Confetti who offer both paper and petal options.
